Bible Study Humor

The teacher was describing how Lot’s wife looked back and turned in to a pillar of salt.  Little Jason interrupted, “My Mommy looked back once while she was driving,” he announced triumphantly, “and she turned into a telephone pole!”

For the next class or children’s sermon:

You all know “Simon says.”
Who tells you what to do?
Be sure you are listening to caring and fair people.
[Brandt Montgomery, a middler at General Theological Seminary]

STORIES

How a Court Appointed Lawyer Sees His Role

A mission at work: When defendants are too poor to afford their own lawyer, Bob is one of those willing to be appointed to take the case by the judge.  While the retainer is minimal, he not only works for a fair trial; he also guides defendants to resources for treatment to develop a healthier and more constructive life.

Lady Liberty and the Scales of JusticeWhere do you see God at work?
“It is a gift to be involved in helping people in the justice system.  God is providing people with a way to escape the past and to start life in a new direction.”
How does God help you?
“I find I am able to represent them as well as I represent the regular cases that come to me.  God helps me to help them to avoid feeling lost by the wayside.”

Leading a Helping Organization

P.E.O. Educational Loan FundA mission in the wider world:  Debby is a member of a local PEO chapter and a leader in PEO regional activities.  PEO is a philanthropic, educational organization interested in bringing to women increased opportunities for higher education. These purposes are accomplished through international, state, and local projects.  PEO supports women's education thru scholarships and loans.  PEO owns and operates the only women's junior college in the US.  For loan information, see P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund Information Card

How do you see God at work here?
All PEO members believe in God.  We are a diverse group of women interested in education and the improvement of family life as a result of educating women.  I am fortunate and grateful for the lifestyle I have and am glad to be participating in an organization that provides me an opportunity to give back to others. We have lofty purposes, and just as important is the invaluable fellowship we have with each other!!!

RESOURCES

Easter Baptisms – Help for the “Sticky” Part of the Catechumenate: it is not easy to follow the early church in seeing transformation of life – growth in prayer, sharing in the church’s ministries, works of love and justice during the week – as the essential qualifications for moving through the stages to baptism at Easter.  Member Mission’s worksheets to discern one’s daily missions move beyond subjective judgments to provide an objective means for such an assessment.  Catechumens / candidates for baptism or reaffirmation discern a mission one week and share how they are carrying it out the next.  And their sponsors are doing the same along with them!  That’s a real support group! Review also Member Mission's Basic Tools 1, 1A, 2, 3, and 3A.

“Seeing the Lord,” a sermon – “eyes of faith” from Mary Magdalene and Thomas to Jeff, Ann, Alan, Carl, and a hospital in the news; the Rev. A. Wayne Schwab, St. John’s Church, Essex, NY; Easter Day, April 11, 2009; John 20:18.

FOR MEDITATION

Injustice and Prejudice

“One of the most blasphemous consequences of injustice and prejudice is that it can make a child of God doubt that he or she is a child of God...” – Desmond Tutu
[Desmond points to what correct during Lent.]
